David Fielding is an independent Choreographer and former
Dancer with Birmingham Royal Ballet and National Ballet of
Portugal.
Born in England in 1973, David trained at the Royal Ballet
School, where he began to choreograph at the age of 11.
Sir Kenneth MacMillan awarded him first prize in the inaugural
Kenneth MacMillan Choreographic Competition in 1990 and he
went on to win prizes at the Ursula Moreton Choreographic
Competition in 1991 and 1993.
While still dancing with the National Ballet of Portugal,
he was given the opportunity to choreograph on the company
and has since created five ballets for them. These works led
to commissions from Portuguese Contemporary Dance Company,
Madeira Ballet Company, Cultural Centre of Belem and two independent
filmmakers who were inspired to include dance sequences in
their films. In 2001 he was invited by Peter Martins to participate
in the New York Choreographic Institute’s fall session
with dancers from New York City Ballet.
In 2003 David moved to London to begin a freelance career
and has since created work for such companies and organisations
as Dance Theatre of Giessen, ROH2, BalletX in Philadelphia,
Ballet Central and Images of Dance amongst others.
David was invited for two consecutive years in 2005/2006 to
create full-length narrative works, ‘The Canterville
Ghost’ and ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’ for the
London Children’s Ballet while simultaneously coordinating
and choreographing for the Royal Opera House’s Chance
to Dance project.
David’s work has been performed in England, Scotland,
Wales, Portugal, Germany, Greece and the U.S.A.
